This variant exhibits novel mutations that may facilitate its spread this autumn, although experts reassure that existing vaccines are likely to offer protection against severe illness.
For individuals at higher risk of severe Covid symptoms, the NHS is providing a complimentary booster shot. While vaccine formulations have been adjusted to better align with recent variants, the XEC variant, derived from previous Omicron subvariants, has not been specifically targeted.

The UK Health Security Agency emphasizes the natural evolution of viruses and the importance of vaccination in safeguarding against severe Covid outcomes. Eligible groups for the free autumn booster include individuals aged 65 and above, residents in elderly care homes, those in clinical risk groups over six months old, and select frontline healthcare workers.
The primary flu and Covid vaccination campaign is set to commence in October, with certain individuals receiving shots earlier. Dr. Gayatri Amirthalingam, Deputy Director at UKHSA, underscores the significance of vaccination and urges prompt response to NHS vaccination invitations.
