people suffering from it.
Scientists have developed rice that may be effective in
lowering blood pressure. Think of giving up over-the-counter drugs and managing
high blood pressure with only a spoonful of rice!
A unique kind of transgenic rice has been developed that
contains numerous anti-hypertensive peptides and has fewer adverse effects than
the current drugs used to treat hypertension, reveals a study published in the
ACS Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
Patients with hypertension have frequently been prescribed a
substance known as an ACE inhibitor. It can be obtained as synthetic
medications and is also naturally present in several foods, including milk,
eggs, fish, meat, and plants. Although it may be successful in reducing high
blood pressure, it can also have negative side effects, including headaches, dry
cough, skin rashes, and kidney damage.
The rice was transgenic when Le Qing Qu's team of
researchers added a gene encoding nine ACE-inhibitory peptides to rice plants.
Hypertensive rats were then fed transgenic rice. It was discovered that the
rice reduced their blood pressure without causing any adverse effects.
According to the researchers, if these peptides have the
same effects in people as in animals, a 150-pound adult would only need to consume roughly half a tablespoon of the genetically altered rice daily to prevent and control hypertension.
