CHECK THE FACTS

Is it true that saltwater can prevent pregnancy?

No. There's no way salt water can help you avoid getting pregnant. The claim is not backed up by scientific evidence.

According to a qualitative study conducted in 2016 at a Nigerian university, this is one of the most unproven and unscientific misconceptions about emergency contraception among students.

Saltwater had no effect on pregnancy prevention in a study of 56 women between the ages of 20 and 36. PrenatalMultivitamins, Essential for Women Trying to Conceive

"There is no scientific logic to this claim," says Dr. Sangita Mahajan Chauhan, MD (OBGYN). After sex, no matter how much salt water you drink; it will not enter your reproductive system and have any effect. And, just in case, there's no evidence that salt (sodium) has any contraceptive properties."

Is it true that salt water is harmful to your health?

YES. IF TAKEN ON A REGULAR BASIS.

In numerous studies, saltwater has been linked to hypertension and high blood pressure. "A glass of saltwater may not harm your health right away," Dr. Chauhan says, "but regular intake of a high concentration of salt will lead to hypertension and poor blood pressure control."

Is it safe to drink saltwater while pregnant?

NOT ALL OF THE TIME.

If your other health parameters are normal, salt water will not harm your pregnancy. In laboratory experiments, a high-sodium diet has been shown to prevent pregnancy-induced drops in blood pressure.

However, without consulting your doctor, there really is no reason to add saltwater to your diet unnecessarily. A high salt intake in the diet has been linked to miscarriage in other studies.
